It’s been roughly four years since the world was hit with a new Deftones album, but in recent months we’ve heard rumblings here and there. It was just earlier this year that an Instagram post showed frontman Chino Moreno in the studio with producer Nick Raskulinecz. So we know work’s being done on the damn thing, but we don’t know where they’re at in the process right now, since it’s been pretty mum in the Deftones camp as of late.
Well, it turns out that we now have a semblance of an idea of how it sounds, thanks to guitarist Stephen Carpenter’s recent appearance on B-Real‘s The Dr. Greenthumb webshow (transcribed by The PRP). During the chat, he let slip that the upcoming record — that we should hopefully know more about as we get closer to their upcoming tour early next year — sounds a lot like their more recent releases.
“I feel this one sounds like a continuation of Ohms and Koi, that’s what I would say… I tell you what, I think when you hear it, like all of our records, you will hear our sound. You’ll hear us. But I think you’re going to hear things on this one that you never heard on any of them. So…”
So there you have it, folks. It’s going to sound like Deftones, but not from the Around the Fur, Adrenaline or White Pony eras. When asked by B-Real if there was going to be any rap on the new release, Carpenter coyly said “not yet,” noting that Moreno “usually finds a way” to showcase his rapping skills on the band’s records.
“He’s really good at flipping up what he does, like, he always changes what he does,[while] still doing what he does. It’s actually pretty dope.”
