That helicopter buzzing the crowd is crazy.
Metal rock was a little after my time and I was never a fan of Mettalica..
But the significance of this event is not lost on me and this concert made me a fan!
The USSR was collapsing when this concert was held at the Tushino Air Field in 1991 and fwiw, Tushino was the top secret military base where the Soviets tested their most advanced fighter aircraft during the Cold War. It was also one of the most heavily guarded bases on the planet. NOBODY stepped foot on Toshino who didn't belong and nobody even tried. During the Cold War the Soviets shot trespassers first and asked questions later. But it was 1991 and I never knew about this concert until YouTube broadcast it but the Cold War was over and for the first time in my life it felt like the world was at peace. I kid you not. In fact, it was the ONLY time I felt that way and the road to peace wasn't easy.
In 1986 Reagan met with Gorbachev in Iceland to discuss nuclear arms reduction. Both sides had enough nukes to destroy life on earth and TWICE the world was at the brink. In 1962 I remember hiding under my desk at school during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Able Archer was the crisis that nobody knew about in 1985 but Able scared the shit out of Reagan. Against this backdrop he & Gorbachev met and, honestly, Reagan would've been thrilled if the Russians would agree to a mutual reduction but Gorby had a better idea. He proposed both sides reduce their nukes to ZERO and eliminate their nuclear arsenals. That's when Reagan almost fell out of his chair but he knew Gorby was a Russian he could do business with and there was only one condition. Gorby wanted Reagan to stop building a missile shield aka Star Wars around America. Then the Berlin Wall fell and Germany wanted to join NATO. That's when the Soviet Union started to crack and Putin was a low ranking KGB agent in E. Germany when the wall came down but Gorgy agreed to allow W German entrance into NATO on one condition. He wanted no further expansion of NATO towards Russia and we promised NATO wouldn't expand one more foot.. but we lied. Then the USSR totally collapsed and Russia's economy collapsed with it but the Russian people had hope.
