There was absolutely nothing like this at the time it was released. I had to buy the album as an import. When I first heard it and years of listening to Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Cream, Iggy and the Stooges(Raw Power) Motorhead, Black Flag, Discharge, etc, I thought, finally, someone pushed the meter so much higher. It's funny too that some people that loved heavy metal didn't know what to make of this. Cranking To Hell and Back or Heavens on Fire or any song on that album. I don't think this will be equaled for a long time. Once in a while you'll see Dave Grohl or Phil Anselmo or another musician wear a Venom shirt. There's a huge appreciation for them amongst many rock/heavy metal bands. Lastly, I think the producer of this should get some credit for how this sounds. I think it was Keith Nicholes….The albums following this were nowhere near the intensity of Black Metal. When I first heard At War With Satan, I thought, what did they do to this, it sounds weak and thin. The previous Album, Welcome to Hell, I knew was a good start.

I love how comparable this is to Metallica. I hear a lower tuned fusion between Whiplash and Phantom Lord.

Venom, Exodus and Slayer show in San Francisco was one of the best live shows I've ever seen! 🤘

You can hear Motorhead's influence on Venom. And you can hear Venom's influence on early Metallica and other early thrash bands.

Someone said they need black metal to concentrate. How do you study with this?

  11. How the hell did it take me this long to listen to these guys?! I'm loving this. Granted, they aren't what I'd call radio friendly but still. I've known Alice Cooper & Motorhead since kindergarten. Then got older & loved Type O & Pantera. Familiar with King Diamond, own & read the Lords of Chaos book a couple times, etc. They were always on the periphary, but I just threw em in the untalented noise genre. This is damn cool, though!
"Lay down your soul for the Gods, Rock & Roll!" is a phenomenal line. 🤘

Damn, it's fast approaching 40 years when I had the "Black Metal" LP. I remember recording this to a Technics tape deck while seeing the Combat Records LP spinning on the turntable. Listening to the MP3 on my phone is not as romantic as watching the LP spinning at 33-1/3 RPM with the tonearm approaching its label. As a leading edge member of GenX, it's hard to believe we will become 60 soon.
