SEPULCHRAL CURSE Ascends with Ferocious Evolution on Crimson Moon Evocations – Album Review

Sepulchral Curse - Crimson Moon Evocations album cover.Sepulchral Curse has returned with their third full-length opus, Crimson Moon Evocations, set to be unleashed upon the world via Dark Descent Records on February 28, 2025. With their signature fusion of blackened death metal fury and Finnish death metal weirdness, the Turku-based quintet solidifies their standing among the elite of the genre. But does this latest effort expand their sonic dominion, or does it merely reinforce familiar ground?

From the opening salvo of “Wildfires,” it’s evident that Crimson Moon Evocations is not just another exercise in brutality but an intentional step forward in Sepulchral Curse’s evolution. The band’s foundational death metal core remains intact, but there’s a noticeable shift towards a more melodic yet aggressive approach, reminiscent of Sulphur Aeon’s grandiose atmospherics rather than the murky depths of death/doom. This added dimension imbues the album with an urgency and complexity that keeps the listener engaged beyond mere headbanging.

Tracks like “House of the Black Moon” and “The Locust Scar” balance sheer aggression with eerie, layered guitar work, demonstrating a greater emphasis on dynamics. The meticulous production by Tomi Uusitupa at Oxroad Studios ensures that every instrument cuts through the mix with ferocious clarity—though be warned, the album is loud. Prepare your speakers (and ears) accordingly.

One of Crimson Moon Evocations’ greatest strengths lies in its guitar work. Jaakko Riihimäki and Aleksi Luukka weave intricate, hellish riffs that oscillate between dissonant tremolo assaults and atmospheric flourishes, enhancing the band’s already massive sound. Meanwhile, the rhythm section—anchored by Niilas Nissilä’s thundering bass and Johannes Rantala’s relentless blast beats—provides the unshakable backbone needed for such an expansive record.

Kari Kankaanpää’s vocals remain a force of nature, summoning abyssal growls from deep within. While his performance is consistently powerful, some might find the lack of variation a minor drawback. Yet, given the sheer ferocity of the delivery, it’s hard to complain when it feels like being dragged through the underworld itself.

While Crimson Moon Evocations is undoubtedly a triumph, it does come with its share of growing pains. The mix, though pristine, is at times overwhelming in its intensity. Additionally, as the band continues to explore new sonic landscapes, one wonders if a more progressive approach could further elevate their craft. Given their evident talent, a deeper dive into avant-garde or technical elements could push Sepulchral Curse into even more uncharted and exciting territories.

Despite minor nitpicks, Crimson Moon Evocations stands as Sepulchral Curse’s strongest release to date. It’s an album that refuses to stagnate, proving that the band values progression without sacrificing their identity. Fans of blackened death metal, especially those seeking a fresh yet blistering take on the genre, will find much to revel in here. Finland continues to deliver, and Sepulchral Curse remains at the forefront of the movement.
