NIRVANA‘s surviving members (Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear) reunited for a surprise performance of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at SNL‘s 50th anniversary concert. Joining them on lead vocals was Post Malone, a self-professed NIRVANA fan. The Friday night show at Radio City Music Hall in New York City featured the performance, introduced by SNL alum Adam Sandler as “Post Nirvana!”
This SNL appearance was NIRVANA‘s second surprise reunion in just a few weeks. Prior to this, Grohl, Novoselic, and Smear performed with Joan Jett, St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, and Violet Grohl at the FireAid benefit concert in Los Angeles.
Post Malone has shown his NIRVANA‘s music in various ways. In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he hosted a livestream concert where he performed a set of NIRVANA hits and fan favorites. The performance, which featured Travis Barker on drums, was critically acclaimed and raised millions of dollars for the UN Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
The SNL50 concert boasted a diverse lineup of performers, including Jack White, Miley Cyrus, Eddie Vedder, Robyn and David Byrne, FUGEES, THE B-52S, and DEVO. Lady Gaga also took the stage, performing “D*ck in the Box.”
