At War With Their Divinity Review

Wow! Definetely wow!

Wythersake with “At War With Their Divinity” took the wow to a whole new level of wow. “At War With Their Divinity” is not only grand, it is magnificent with the known prone to classical music interventions which are more organic now. I have already felt that with “Antiquity,” but now things are pretty different. The thing is for Wythersake the orchestrations are not meant to be on the background or meant only to add some new mood, they are an important whole part of the song. That is why the organic.

“At War With Their Divinity” commences with the astoning “Purity through Non Existence,” a track whose drumming speed is jawbreaking and with the change of mood also astonishes the fan. The contrast between the initial drumming and the post-punk mood of the rest of the song is outstanding. When The Sisters of Mercy meet Napalm Death could be a colorful analogy. Many would say what Wythersake do here is impossible. It is not. With Bloodlet the Lepers Created they repeat the formula with less shifts, but the same unearthly drumming. The speed drummer Daniel Salamanca lays down here is more than impressive. Those two initial tracks plus “Dancing Plagues of Modern Man” give a hint of what “At War With Their Divinity” will be; an album where the prowness is incorporated to the band’s metier as a natural thing and the classical music inspirations are not only inspirations, they are incorporated into the band’s music. To some extent, as in “Dancing Plagues of Modern Man,” they sound as important as the guitars. As an album of rappid changes, tittle track At War With Their Divinity lays down all the band’s musical cruelty, but not rawness. Well, nothing about Wythersake can ever be raw. The track moves graciously with the all aforementioned orchestrations natural to the band. It is with “Devour the Throne of Grace” that Wythersake exercize the musicians’ harmony with guitars, bass, and drums playing all together in one of the most cohesive wall of sounds I have ever heard.

Do you think it’s enough changes? No, no, no. There comes the instrumental “Gotterdammerung” with Metallica‘s golden era inspired instrumentals with interesting strummings and perfect drumming. To some extent, this is the most Melodic Death Metal track Wythersake could ever have recorded. Grace is also an adjective that expresses greatly the music in here.

I could go on and on, but “At War With Their Divinity” is one the finest albums of this year. Finally Wythersake made peace with their divinity. Period.
