THOSE DAMN CROWS Strike Gold with God Shaped Hole – A Raw and Emotionally Charged Journey – Album Review

“A record that demonstrates the daily struggles of being human can be a breath of fresh air.”

Those Damn CrowsEvery now and then, everyone needs an album that is real, with a collection of songs that lack gimmicks and are straightforward. A record that demonstrates the daily struggles of being human and coming to face one’s emotions can be a breath of fresh air. Those Damn Crows have done exactly that with their 4th album, God Shaped Hole, managing to be a wholehearted record filled with raw emotion and the music to match the energy.

The band starts off God Shaped Hole with the intro track “Dancing with the Enemy,” with a catchy riff that immediately connects the listener with what they are in store for. Lyrically, this seems to be a song about confronting the things in our daily lives that we may be afraid of. Another standout track on the album would be “Glass Heart,” as the song structure in this song is bouncy, with a fun chorus that circulates around lyrics that present a message about hearts being easy to break. “Let’s Go Psycho” is a track worth mentioning because it’s the heaviest on the album and doesn’t slow down for a moment. “Still,” being the last track on the album, is by far the most emotional track and a beautifully composed ballad.

“Every song is a piece of them, and we were lucky enough to receive such raw emotion and musical passion.”

God Shaped Hole is a musical journey that is easy to digest but, at the same time, has replayability for years because there is much to dissect. The album is perfectly crafted, featuring instrumentals from Ronnie Huxford on drums, Ian “Shiner” Thomas and David Winchurch’s amazing guitar riffs, and Lloyd Wood’s groovy bass slaps. Vocally, Shane Greenhall really balances out the emotion of the record while tackling many different ranges throughout the vast offering that is God Shaped Hole. Those Damn Crows wanted us to go on a journey with them, and they succeeded. Every song is a piece of them, and we were lucky enough to receive such raw emotion and musical passion.
