Legendary rock band THE WHO have parted ways with longtime drummer Zak Starkey following their recent performance at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall.
Starkey, Ringo Starr‘s son, was reportedly let go from THE WHO after a publicly aired disagreement with vocalist Roger Daltrey during the band’s recent Royal Albert Hall shows in London. Starkey hinted at prior knowledge of his dismissal in a seemingly casual social media update.
“The band made a collective decision to part ways with Zak after this round of shows at the Royal Albert Hall. They have nothing but admiration for him and wish him the very best for his future,” a representative for the band said in a statement.
During one of the Albert Hall performances, Daltrey is said to have addressed the crowd to complain about Starkey‘s excessive drumming.
“To sing that song I do need to hear the key, and I can’t,” Daltrey told the crowd. “All I’ve got is drums going boom, boom, boom. I can’t sing to that. I’m sorry, guys.”
Starkey‘s knowing and slightly sarcastic Instagram post this weekend suggested he anticipated the announcement of his departure, and that the circumstances were less amicable than portrayed by THE WHO‘s representative.
Accompanying a picture of him with Daltrey, Starkey the following message in all uppercase letters: “Heard today from inside source that Toger Daktrey [sic] lead singer and principal songwriter of the group unhappy with Zak the drummer’s performance at the Albert Hall a few weeks ago is bringing formal charges of overplaying and is literally going to Zak the drummer.”
