The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

This week’s new heavy metal releases include atmospheric heaviness, cathartic chaos, operatic doom, and more on this Good Friday! To the metals…

Blackwater Holylight – If You Only Knew

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Doom/psychedelic indie
Origin: Portland, Pregon
Label: Suicide Squeeze

Buy now on Bandcamp

Starting this week off with a little trip of an EP. Over four tracks Blackwater Holylight take you to space. This is the kind of thing that fans of shoegaze, harder indie, Chelsea Wolfe, and Blood Ceremony can all agree on.

Divide And Dissolve – Insatiable

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Neo classical/experimental doom
Origin: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia –
Label: Bella Union

Buy now on Bandcamp

This is a record of slow builds and heavy rewards. Most tracks are not doom on the surface, but when they hit they HIT. More often though, this is an experimental, string-forward (or at least string synth) affair.

Gama Bomb – Necronomicon Automaton

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Thrash
Origin: Dublin, Ireland
Label: Prosthetic Records

Buy now from here…maybe?

Here is a fun one after the calm introspection of the above releases. This is a thrash EP with a song called “Nunchucks!” and two songs with “Necro-” in their titles. There’s nothing to be mad about. Play loud and get rowdy.

Iron Lung – Adapting // Crawling

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Grindcore/hardcore
Origin: Seattle, Washington
Label: Self-released

Buy now on Bandcamp

Iron Lung‘s first release in twelve years consists of eighteen tiny slabs of chaos. It sounds so angry, but when you dive into the lyrics it’s much sadder and darker. This winds up being a brief catharsis.

Lik – Necro

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Death metal
Origin: Stockholm, Sweden
Label: Metal Blade

Buy now on Bandcamp

Speaking of “Necro,” here’s some straight up death metal fury. Some melodic elements are present here, but this is largely death metal that sounds like it was fueled by three metal zone pedals in a row (in a great way). Quite the return following a five year gap.

Melvins 1983 – Thunderball

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Sludge
Origin: Montesano, Washington
Label: Ipecac

Buy now from Bandcamp

As the artist name would indicate, this is a return to a twist on King Buzzo‘s usual antics. This is the reunion of the 1983 era of the band with Buzz Osborne and Mike Dillard. This time they are joined by noise artists Void Manes and Ni Maîtres. The latter is also credited as contributing “hand gestures.” So have fun listening for for those?

Sick N’ Beautiful – Horror Vacui

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Hard rock/modern metal
Origin: Rome, Italy
Label: BLKIIBLK

Buy now from Sick N’Beautiful

Sick N’ Beautiful‘s latest feels like both a throwback to classic Rob/White Zombie and a snapshot of where hard rock and metal are now. This has buzzing industrial elements, massive choruses, electronic beds, and horror nods. Overall a fun one. I could see them on any of the Danny Wimmer festivals and doing well.

Superheaven – Superheaven

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Shoegaze/grunge
Origin: Doylestown, Pennsylvania
Label: Blue Grape

Buy now on Bandcamp

I must be in some sort of mood to keep coming back to these shoegaze-y rock acts. Anyway, the self-titled release from Superheaven could pair with Nothing or Deftones nicely. Lots of atmosphere and crashing walls of sound when it gets heavy.

Svnth – Pink Noise Youth

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Atmospheric black metal/post-hardcore
Origin: Rome, Italy
Label: These Hands Melt

Buy now on Bandcamp

Next up, we’re keeping things atmospheric, but working in some blackened bits. It would be easy to hear a little of this and consider them a Deafheaven-esque band. However, the deeper you goes on this release the more variety and rewards you find. There are times when it reminds me of Ghost even.

Tribunal – In Penitence And Ruin

The Weekly Injection: New Releases From MELVINS, BLACKWATER HOLYLIGHT & More Out This Week 4/18

Genre: Operatic doom
Origin: Vancouver, British Columbia
Label: 20 Buck Spin

Buy now on Bandcamp

Wrapping this week with a weird and wonderful one. This is a slow, heavy, and epic record. There’s cello and operatic vocals mixed with doooooooooooooooom. Hell yeah.
