What is the best way to commence a Metal album? Is it with an intro? Or is it with an open and firm roar give the fan goosebumps?
Honestly? I would go with the second, moreover, when it is followed by an avalanche of guitars, drums, and basses. For me there is no better way.
“Existentialismus” commences exactly like this in a mix of Extreme Metal features with “A Legacy of Sores.“ It seems like Abduction got the guitars of Black Metal with Death Metal blast beats, some harsh vocals put them all in the cauldron, stirred, and got the album. Sometimes when a band does like this there is no predicting the outcome, however I guess it is worth the try. Tracks as “Pyramidia Liberi” prove my point. It seems the band took the liberty to add some elements that took the song far from Extreme Metal, but added some flavor. From everything I heard here the blend the band does works just fine. “Truth is as Sharp a Sword as Vengeance,” for instance, with its standard Black Metal approach in its more than eight minutes is furious. The desperate vocals create an atmosphere of hopelessness that drenches the fans. Not even the sarcastic speach in the middle of it could take away this state of hopelessness.
“Existentialismus” is as raw as it can be given the experience and the ability of its musicians. Some tracks as “Blau ist die Farbe der Ewigkeit“ experiments some effects in the background, but so background that only the most attentive fan will have some dificult to perceive them. On the other hand, “Razors of Occam” has some more cadenced guitars exploring the tempo peaks and calmer vocals, however, in a sudden, everything changes into some hell on earth. This is how the album goes. Here and there Abduction try some new tricks, but without changing their raw Black Metal roots.
