Crypts of Despair – We Belong in the Grave Review

“We Belong in the Grave” welcomes the fan with a fantastic sequence of bass drumming that immeadiately calls the attention. From the beginning the fan who pays close attention to the musical details will realize Crypts of Despair deliver an uncanny kind of Death Metal. With this moody and full of dissonances the eponymous track showcases what I believe is the band’s signature sound, that is, the ability of building up their songs with sequences of standard playing, which, suddenly, changes into an organized cacophony with dissonances and wicked drumming. Add to this an insane vocal.

Crypts of Despair‘s heaviness is not only given by being fast, it is much more. It is the effect of an organized cacophony that takes the lead. But how do they do that? It is a complex combination of guitar dissonances with a flamboyant drumming that uses lots of blast beats. It helps a lot the low guitar and bass tones that help the heavyness impression. Of course, there are moments as in “Undisillusioned” that the band goes faster than the speed of light, however, the interesting part is that no track here is fast all the time. All of them have breaks. On the other hand, tracks as “Seizures” explore a slow cadence with effects to create an unwelcoming atmopshere. Sometimes the fan has the impression the instruments are at the same time running up or slowing down or, even, out of tune. Following track “Precipitous” also explores these nuances of space and time to create hell on earth kind of music.

Make no mistake, “We Belong in the Grave” is brutal, very brutal, however, its brutality does not come only from the speed, it comes from a cohese intent of using unsual techniques. It is very hard to make a band function the way Crypts of Despair do here because all musicians must have an incredible sense of keeping the tempo. Take for instance the introduction of “Burial of the World,” it’s the guitars and, mainly, the bass that give the sense of tempo, not the drums which sound to be totally free. Yeah, Death Metal is musically evolving fast. Crypts of Despair with “We Belong in the Grave” prove it.

Crypts of Despair “We Belong in the Grave” will be released on April 18th via Transcending Obscurity Records.
