Yeah! Brutal raw Old School Heavy Metal with close flirts with Hardcore. That’s what Galgeberg with “Cerberus” deliver the fan today. No clean production that makes the guitars hard to tell what they are playing, but you know what? Fantastic! That’s exactly the spirit of Metal music in its rawest form and spirit. Just the way I remember early Nuclear Assault, the first Extreme Metal band I have ever heard. I will never forget the classic “Hang the Pope.” By the way, “Prelude to Genocide” has the exact same feeling. The Pope and genocide have everything to do. I like this kind of album because it is possible to feel all the anger with the vicious attack in the form of louder than hell music. Louder than hell being kind because it is not possible to be louder. I wonder to watch Galgeberg alive.
The press release informs Galgeberg translate to Gallows Hill, an intersection in Oslo known historically as the site where gallows once stood, casting long shadows over the city. This dark, charged place lends its name to a three-piece death metal band, Galgeberg, whose members might ring a bell for enthusiasts familiar with the scene. These seasoned musicians, while possibly recognized from their stints in various influential bands, gathered under the Galgeberg banner to carve out a new narrative in the metal genre. Very interesting story. I love bands with a story behind.
Album warmer “Epicurean Paradox” gives all the details of what “Cerberus” is all about, that is, three minute tracks of pure filthy Metal music wrapped wiht Hardcore simplicity and straight-aheadness that give the music that sense of urgency. With “Unparalleled Suffering” Galgeberg showcase all their guns blazing leaving nothing behind. It is a brutal punch in the face of those who still believe there is some kind of future for humankind the way things are going. Cinicism is really no part of Galgeberg‘s music at least. With fast-resolved guitar riffs, the band delivers its message with no shadows of doubt. Outdated? Hmm, maybe for some, but actually our future – or present. “Kleptocrat Infestation” is another direct hit. Pure Galgeberg‘s genome of unrestlessness.
“Cerberus” is an album to praise loud and noise music as many of its Crossover peers as Warfare, C.O.C., S.O.D., and many others. That kind of one-two-three-four-and-go music we are pleased to hear every now and then. To be fair with Galgeberg, I think they are a Crossover piece, I cannot see any hint of Death Metal, but that is okay if you do. No hard feelings…
Galgeberg “Cerberus” will be released on March 28th via Our Ancient Future.
