Hate – Bellum Regiis Review

Hate – Bellum Regiis Review

A Metal band called Hate. What name could else be greater? I cannot came with a better one. Better than Hate only Demon, by the way do you, my dear child of the night know Demon? Simple names are always the best.

Another cool thing about Hate is the name of their new album – the thirteenth – “Bellum Regiis,” which is a Latin expression that means war of kings. Even though the album is not said to be a concept album, this subject goes through it . In fact, as the press release says “Bellum Regiis’” first single is “Iphigenia” who, in Greek mythology, was a daughter of King Agamemnon and Queen Clytemnestra. Music was written first, and Sinner, the band’s mastermind, found her story connected beautifully with it. “It’s about sacrificing your life for a greater cause. The example of Iphigenia is striking because she is given a choice to save her own life, yet she decides to be put to death, and in this way help support the Greek side in the Trojan War.”

In terms of music, “Bellum Regiis” is a very cohesive album not only regarding the lyrical content, but also it keeps the same cadence and tempo most of the time. Hate are a band that can give their songs a total heavyness without exploring the high speeds. Grand finale “Ageless Harp of Devilry” is a good example. I would call it slow death the way the band does its music. Add to the band’s formula a grand dose of melody as in album tittle track “Bellum Regiis” showcases the fan with its tons of guitar strummings contrasting with the harsh hard vocals. By the way, the album is a power house of musical contrasts. This contrast is the band’s signature, if I am allowed to say.

Undoubtedly, Hate have a very personal way of telling stories. On its own way, “Bellum Regiis” is a very complex album with lots of features that are not usual about Black Metal. The total lack of high speed tracks is the most obvious one. Slow death is really a good definition for the album.

Hate “Bellum Regiis” will be released on May 02nd via Metal Blade Records.
