Hopeless Records was the shit growing up. If you were even slightly emo or screamo or metal-ly they had something for you, and now they’re giving back even more by launching the Hopeless Music Academy, set to fully start early in 2025.
The Academy comes in partnership with the label’s nonprofit sector The Hopeless Foundation (who has donated a GRIP of money to over 150 charities) and New Directions for Youth, a non-profit organization that’s worked with marginalized communities for almost 50 years now. The program is Los Angeles-based and centered around providing education and mentoring in several facets of the music industry for marginalized and under-supported communities.
A pilot program for the university will start in November, where kids aged 13-18 can enroll in after-school programs, opportunities for internships, jobs, apprenticeships, and more. Plus, they’ll have access to a baller ass recording studio equipped with all the finest audio equipment treasures. Students will learn about the music industry, gaining background on many positions including engineers and producers and even the more creative aspects of the industry like songwriting. From a software side, students will learn about Logic Pro X and other Pro Tools.
Louis Posen, founder and CEO of Hopeless Records, had this to say of the upcoming venture:
“Ever since I started Hopeless thirty years ago, ‘paying it forward’ in the industry and beyond has been a top priority, and one that’s woven into everything we do at The Hopeless Foundation. Partnering with New Directions For Youth on the Hopeless Music Academy, and working to make a difference for kids in the community who want to be in this business, is a true honor.”
New Directions For Youth Executive director Monica Asutin-Jackson added:
“Getting to partner with a label like Hopeless, which has such amazing connections in the industry, and a leader like Louis — someone who really cares, and is willing to put in the work to do his part — is a privilege. We are excited to help even more students tap into their creativity and skills through the Academy.”
