From all the albums I have ever reviewed here, “Limited Deadition” is the one with the most uncanny and unexpected thematic. I will add creative to it. Even though action figure collections are part of many people’s lives, no band has ever touched the subject. No band, Metal or not, has ever used it as an inspiration to albums, songs, or whatever. Now Lordi have.
Besides the thematic, “Limited Deadition” also innovates with the tracks that make the liaison, or bridges, from one track to the other. In the album they all have the SCG initials – do not ask what it is, please. I searched and I was not able to find out what it means. The ones with SCGTV work as if they were TV commercials. By the way, “Limited Deadition” is organized as if it were a 1980’s TV show. On the other hand, even thought the album is totally inspired on the 1980s, the music here does not sound as the Hard Rock or Metal music from that epoch. It is the modern Hard Rock Lordi have contributed to make famous. Or, sometimes, they would sound pretty much as the 1970’s Alice Cooper as the ballad “Collectable.” By the way, Alice Cooper‘s name and influence are a constant. There are exceptions, of course, as “Hellizabeth.”
Musicwise, keyboards are the prominent instruments here as in tracks as “Retropolis.” Tracks like it might tell the guitars bounce from 1980’s inspired riffs to modern solos. Album tittle “Limited Deadition” tells this tale better than I would ever. Even though, power ballads as “Frighteousness” call out for some 1990’s inspiration, their mood is really linked to the 1980’s with a clear reference to Judas Priest’s “Love Bites” – in the dead of nights…
Between a dark, but sharp, sense of humor, “Limited Deadition” is also full of a nonsense spirit as it can be felt by the feeling the action figures are alive. Well, in fact, this nonsense spirit is also a part of Lordi’s music. Better, yet, in this album they have their own TV shows. Weird, huh. Great album, great album.
Lordi “Limited Deadition” will be released on March 21st via Reigning Phoenix Music.
