Lzzy Hale of HALESTORM recently spoke with Audacy Music about her upcoming appearance at the highly anticipated “Back To The Beginning” charity show on July 5th at Villa Park in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
This event holds historical importance as it will be the last time the original members of BLACK SABBATH perform together and Ozzy Osbourne‘s final solo show. During the interview, she was asked if she planned to perform “Close My Eyes Forever” – a song she famously recorded as a duet with DISTURBED‘s David Draiman for his DEVICE album – at the concert, to which Lzzy responded (as transcribed by Blabbermouth): “So, according to [RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE‘s] Tom Morello [who is the musical director for the concert], that is in the works, but he said, ‘You’re gonna have to be patient with the confirmation for that.’ Because of Ozzy‘s health and everything, we’re gonna have to see pretty much on the day how much Ozzy‘s going to be singing and willing to do. But HALESTORM is doing a set. We’re also doing a BLACK SABBATH cover. And I’ve been asked to sing in the supergroup with Tom Morello and everybody there.”
When asked how HALESTORM became involved in the concert, Lzzy explained: “Dude, so we got this e-mail from Sharon Osbourne. And I didn’t answer it for two days. ’cause I’m, like, ‘Is this real?’ It’s wild.”
“I’ve been a BLACK SABBATH fan since I was 11,” she continued. “The first riff I ever learned a guitar was ‘Heaven And Hell’ by BLACK SABBATH. And then you opened for HEAVEN & HELL in 2009, with Ronnie James Dio, and that was Ronnie James Dio‘s last show before he passed away. So it’s this incredible full-circle, unfathomable dream. If you had told me this when I was 13, I’d be, like, ‘You’re a liar. This will never happen to me.’”
Lzzy added that being the only woman invited to perform was also a great honor.
“I was talking to my friends, uh, [THE PRETTY RECKLESS‘s] Taylor Momsen and [EVANESCENCE‘s] Amy Lee and [IN THIS MOMENT‘s] Maria Brink and all of my sisters in this genre, and they’re all so proud of me,” she said. “And I said, ‘Hey, girls, I’m carrying you with me. You’re gonna be there in spirit. I’m gonna make you girls so proud.’ And so it’s this beautiful event that everyone gets to look forward to. I’m so glad they’re doing it.”
BLACK SABBATH and Ozzy Osbourne‘s final show, scheduled for July 5th at Villa Park in Birmingham, England, is shaping up to be a historic event. Dubbed “Back To The Beginning,” this concert will mark the culmination of the band’s groundbreaking career and a celebration of their enduring legacy.
The event will also feature performances by METALLICA, SLAYER, PANTERA, GUNS N’ ROSES, TOOL, GOJIRA, ALICE IN CHAINS, HALESTORM, LAMB OF GOD, ANTHRAX, and MASTODON.
Ozzy Osbourne, who has postponed his “No More Tours 2” shows several times due to illness, the pandemic, and logistical issues, and who paused touring in 2023 after spinal surgery, will perform his last concert ever at Villa Park, according to Sharon.
“Ozzy didn’t have a chance to say goodbye to his friends, to his fans, and he feels there’s no been no full stop,” she said. “This is his full stop.”
“It’s my time to go Back to the Beginning, time for me to give back to the place where I was born,” Ozzy said in a statement. “How blessed am I to do it with the help of people whom I love.
The proceeds from the event will benefit Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorn Children’s Hospice, a hospice for children supported by Aston Villa.
