Following Brent Hinds‘ departure from MASTODON on March 5th, the band played their first show without him at TOOL‘s “Live In The Sand” on March 9th, with YouTube guitarist Ben Eller filling in. The band has not confirmed Eller‘s permanent status, and questions remain regarding Hinds‘ involvement in their upcoming album.
Now, in a new interview with Guitar World, MASTODON guitarist Bill Kelliher revealed that the band’s upcoming record will be completed without the involvement of Hinds.
He said: “It’ll be the three of us [Kelliher, bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders, and drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor]. It’s stuff the three of us have written together.”
Regarding MASTODON‘s decision to bring Eller for their performance at the “Live In The Sand” festival in the Dominican Republic, Kelliher stated: “We had Ben Eller, who’s a great friend, and he filled in for this show. And we’ve got the COHEED [AND CAMBRIA] tour coming up. So, we’ll figure it out. We’ve got a lot of requests and stuff like that. But it’s really hard shoes to fill, obviously. Nobody plays like Brent. He’s a very, extremely unique player. So it’s not gonna be an easy task. We’re all hopeful and we’re gonna figure it out. So that’s really all I have to say about it.”
Alongside Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher, and Brann Dailor, Hinds helped form MASTODON in 2000. He played on all eight of their albums, spanning from Remission (2002) to Hushed and Grim (2021). Beyond MASTODON, Hinds‘ musical endeavors include performances with FIEND WITHOUT A FACE, WEST END MOTEL, GIRAFFE TONGUE ORCHESTRA, and LEGEND OF THE SEAGULLMEN.
