One of the most iconic thrash metal songs ever written finally surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, as Metallica‘s “Master of Puppets” joins Spotify’s Billions Club, an elite group songs that reached or surpassed the major milestone. When you consider the incalculable amount of music that makes its way on to the streaming service every day, 920 songs with a billion or more streams is an infinitesimally tiny number.
The addition of “Master of Puppets” makes it only the third Metallica track to reach more than a billion streams on Spotify. The other two tracks are from the 1991 Black Album: “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters”.
Streaming numbers for “Master of Puppets” were no doubt helped by its inclusion in the hit Netflix show Stranger Things, in which it was used during a pivotal moment in the third season that kicked off countless memes on social media. And though there were countless other songs that would have been better in that scene, it’s undeniable that “Master of Puppets” had a moment for a while there in 2022.
Along with Metallica’s previous inclusions in the Billions Club, the iconic track joins other major hits like System of a Down‘s massive song “Toxicity”, Linkin Park’s “In the End”, and Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”.
Looking at Metallica’s most popular tracks on Spotify, the next one that could join the Billions Club is “One” off of their 1988 masterpiece …And Justice For All. When it’ll get there is anyone’s guess though, since it’s only got 672,661,755 streams at the time of this post.
