MONARCHS OF THE STONE AGE Set to Create Historic Moment As First Band to Perform A Gig In the Paris Catacombs

Rulers of the Stone Age are soon to become the first band ever to present a concert at the renowned Catacombs of Paris. Lead vocalist Josh Homme disclosed this groundbreaking event at a media gathering during the recent Hellfest festival in Clisson, France. The show will be captured on record.

Homme expressed: “In around a week, we are scheduled to perform at the Paris Catacombs, becoming the pioneering band to do so. This has been a vision of mine for 18 years, aiming to secure the opportunity to perform at this esteemed venue in Paris. And it will be a completely live experience.”

Reflecting on the choice to document the concert, Homme remarked: “I wish to explore novel ways of presenting these common notions, such as a live album, and approach them from a different angle. With the prevalence of the Internet, people can easily witness our live performances through various means, hence I am interested in delivering a live experience that is not commonly seen. We will release these exclusive versions and leave the rest for the fans to decide. Fans can have control over how they prefer to experience our live shows, whether in person or online. I am indifferent to the method people use to enjoy our music, as long as they find it in their preferred way. However, I hope to experiment with these concepts in a unique manner. That’s why I introduced the Catacombs.”

The Catacombs of Paris have a rich history, established in the late eighteenth century due to significant public health concerns associated with overcrowded graveyards. From 1785 to 1787, the remains from Paris’s largest cemetery, Saints-Innocents, were relocated to an underground space within the former Tombe-Issoire quarries. The site was consecrated as the “Paris Municipal Ossuary” on April 7, 1786, eventually gaining the renowned title of “Catacombs” inspired by the Roman catacombs which had long fascinated the public. By 1809, the Catacombs were made accessible to the public by appointment.
