THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS are reportedly selling their recorded music catalog, which includes hits like “Dani California” and “Californication.” While they own 13 studio albums and other releases through Warner Music Group (WMG), ownership of their first four albums, released by EMI in the US, is unclear.
Regardless, any EMI-controlled recordings are also part of the sale. This catalog generates an estimated $26 million annually, primarily through WMG‘s portion, with EMI‘s share contributing about $1 million. While some sources indicate a deal with WMG is already in place, others suggest the catalog is still available.
The band is seeking around $350 million, though the final price is expected to be between $325 million and $340 million. This sale follows the band’s previous sale of their music publishing rights to Hipgnosis four years ago for over $140 million. Combined, these sales could net the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS approximately $500 million.
With more than 120 million records sold globally, the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS rank among the best-selling bands in history. They hold the records for the most number-one singles (15) on the American Alternative Songs chart, the longest cumulative time at number one (91 weeks), and the most top-ten songs (28) on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The band has won three Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2022.
