I think Styx could only afford to use one spotlight back then 😃

Met these guys in 78. They were all stoned, and Tommy Shaw was having an acne break out. He looked like he was 15 years old, just a kid. Ahhhh the 70’s!

My very first rock concert at the San Diego sports arena in 78 or 79 I think The Cars opened for them playing from their first album. Two great bands of the late 70’s and yeah getting tickets was easy and it didn’t cost much, and it was an awesome concert! Thanks for posting!

Styx was the first live concert for me, 1978. 12 years old. First time smelling weed. What a great show!

I saw this tour in Montreal. I remember Dennis DeYoung doing that weird intro for "Born For Adventure" (1:21:07) where he has a sword fight with his mic stand. Other than that mildly cringe-worthy moment, it was a great show!

I saw this tour in a hall of about 2,500 people. These songs really filled the place with magic–even the mirror ball looked cool. Such a great sound for a rock show.

Saw 'em at Columbia–Greene Community College in Hudson, NY, in 1975. They played much of the same set as in this film. They were awesome that night and everyone was on their feet nearly the entire show.

I loved Styx in this era, but talk about 1970s rock cliches! I bet their amps went to 11, also.

I saw Dennis solo. Directly in front of his keyboard. Stole his taped down setlist right off the floor when the show ended. It proudly hangs on my refrigerator to this day

A somewhat nostalgic AND disappointing thing to find on YouTube for me! I was a senior in HS when the Grand Illusion tour came through Corpus Christi and I contrived a scheme to shoot the concert for school credit. I was in journalism (yearbook, newspaper) AND multi-media class and thought that if I could shoot the show and MAYBE the setup it would be a cool media class project. I talked to the teacher who had me write up a proposal for the principal to consider (I'd have to miss school) and they all agreed it would be a great project. With letter from the principal in hand…on school stationary…I went to the venue (Memorial Coliseum) early in the morning and sought the promoter. Even he agreed it would be a neat high school project.

So they agree to let me hang around during the setup (towers of speakers, stage props/gear) and lighting etc. WHAT BUGGED ME AT THE TIME was seeing a director get up on stage and start hitting some poses and the lighting get adjusted for said pose and gestures. Keep in mind this was 1978 and Styx was really just starting to hit big. So I take some shots of this part of the setup…poses, lighting adjustments, tape being stuck to the floor for each and then the sound check. I was told NO PHOTOS WITH BAND OUT OF 'COSTUME.' Again…that hit me a little weird…"costume." I keep my camera gear on the floor and my arms crossed…they threatened to take my gear if they saw me trying to sneak photos at this part of the setup. Take no chances. Arms crossed. Next…wait for the venue to fill, sit through Leggs Diamond (ugh…"a diamond is a hard rock" was a TERRIBLE song) and then for the main event. BTW…I was front row, center with camera gear. Perfect. Minimal effect of the smoke that filled the hall.

SO. Concert starts, it was fun, I got some fantastic pictures and had a helluva slide show I put to Styx music and got great marks for the project. The yearbook got a few of the pictures too. One of the end of song poses hit a chord with an artist who did a life-size pencil drawing/standup that graced a local record "super store" for years.

So I find this film. Not only are the guys in the band wearing the exact same "costumes" they're hitting the exact same poses I can pull up photos to show. The hokey "unified" guitar strumming by JY and TS is another reminder…but I find "the pose" that became the pencil standup drawing at 16:00 in this video. Alllllll setup and choreographed. All planned. The only thing differing from today seems to be the lack of dancers.

One of the reasons RUSH was one of the best shows ever is that it's just guys playing music. Alex to one side, Geddy to the other and Neil on the perch. Alex and Geddy would meet in the middle a few times with those weird looks they give each other…but it was just guys and the music. The Grand Illusion show really did put a sour taste in this fan's mouth over the absolute theatrics put on stage we later learn (maybe others knew before this) that DeYoung did so much of that staging and planning. The Kilroy was Here tour was the absolute worse in that regard.

Just play the songs, guys….just play the songs. Let the music do the talking. END OF RANT
