This is the kind of Black Metal I am really used to. Debut album “Catharsis Till Dawn” is the perfect catharsis -oops! – of how aggressive and filthy Black Metal must sound. They really got me with the “Let’s go” of the initial moments of thw frentic and violent “The Storm of War” which reminded me the good old times of a band that used to be the fastest and the most aggressive of all. I will not say their name.
“Catharsis Till Dawn” celebrates death through opening track “Celestial Carnage,” a track that, de rigueur, follows Taär’s concept of being “a nostalgic, warlike black metal band which is heavily influenced heavily by the 1990’s underground scene.” I had that in mind when I started writing this review and, I felt overwhelmed by the band’s ability to musically recreate a war zone. Opening track is just one of them, but I guess there are two tracks that do more justice to that concept which are grand finale and album tittle track “Catharsis Till Dawn” which simply the war drums of an alleged middle age battle; the other would be “The Storm of War” for not only its drums, but also the atmosphere the track is able to create to the fan.
Musicwise, “Catharsis Till Dawn” delivers black metallers straight ahead Metal music with very few finesse and when they do they are also direct like a punch. This kind of ability is very much appreciated because it may look easy, but, in fact, it is not. It’s the other way around. It’s lot easier to fill in the songs with lots and lots of passages. Pay close attention how the direct guitar chords “Feathered Echoes of Wrath” work so naturally and takes the fan attention. Even the changes of mood are direct with no finesse. I liked very much the full of distortion guitar strumming of the beginning of “Perpetual Descent” due to its martial mood like souls slowly going to purgatory. On the other hand, the heaviness and speed of “At Depths of Damnation” give the fan the feeling he is already in the seven depthd of hell. However, I am afraid the soundtrack of hell might not be Black Metal. There are other serious candidates…
