The Slime – Crabwalk to Oblivion Review

In general, I avoid all bands with “The” in their names because they take to a place I do not want to be. That’s it. However, The Slime with “Crabwalk to Oblivion” called my attention from the first minute I received its pack. First, because it came very early, I received the pack in last October, so, more than six months earlier. Second, because The Slime are a Hardcore band formed in 2019, so, a pack of youngsters who embraced the good old Hardcore, a genre that is very imprtant not only to Metal music, but to music in general mostly for their political positions, and, of course, their straight-ahead way of making music. Third, I was very curious to get to know how new Hardcore bands were muscially behaving.

“Crabwalk to Oblivion” is a breath of fresh air not only because of its musical approach that brings very few news, but also because they are bringing a layer of dark terror and humor to this new conservative world. Just take a look at the album cover to get what I am saying. The Slime added some 1950’s horror B movies elements into their métier – only the initiated will understand its fine irony. Musicwise, the album adds some layers of Metal music in the songs as in “Velociraptor” without lacking the straight-aheadness of Hardcore. “Blood Island,” a track that was previously released and came along with my pack, even has a guitar solo with other Metal elements. “Crab-Walk,” for instance is a cross over of Hardcore and Metal not only in its sonancy, but also in its songwriting. The way the song was written showcases Metal music influences. With angry Hardcore vocals giving the track its way, the guitar riffs of “Russian Roulette” showcases they are pure Metal, if you know what I mean. One more mixed arts tracks The Slime deliver the fans.

I’d say “Crabwalk to Oblivion” is a great look to what Hardcore bands are doing these days. It is great to realize they are still around even though times are not in their favor – ewll, to some extent it has never been. On the other hand, it always great to have new kids on the block. I give all my respects to The Slime.

The Slime “Crabwalk to Oblivion” will be released on March 28th.
