This week’s new heavy metal releases include lots of blackened stuff, some cowboy boots, and more! To the metals…
Bloodywood – Nu Delhi
Genre: Folk/nu metal
Origin: New Delhi, India
Label: Fearless
Buy now on Bandcamp
India’s groovy metal sensation is back with another record of powerful heaviness. They continue their blend of traditional influences and what has become the norm for nu metal. This also record includes a Babymetal cameo which is pretty rad.
Iggor Cavalera & Shane Embury – Neon Gods/Own Your Darkness
Genre: Industrial/dark ambient
Origin: Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil/Broseley, Shropshire, England
Label: Cold Spring Records
Buy now on Bandcamp
This is a two track split between Cavalera Conspiracy‘s Iggor Cavalera and Napalm Death‘s Shane Embury. Neither dude is up to what they normally are here though. Each song is long and mostly whooshing, static, or tense noises.
Cradle Of Filth – The Screaming Of The Valkyries
Genre: Extreme metal
Origin: Suffolk, England
Label: Napalm
Buy now on Bandcamp
On Cradle of Filth‘s first record in four years, Dani and the gang are up to their usual antics. You’re getting their trademark blackened, bombastic metal that is sure to ruffle the features of your uptight family members. The aforementioned gang includes a couple new faces in Donny Burbage (Æther Realm) on guitar and Zoe Marie Federoff (Catalyst Crime) on keyboards/vocals.
Drudkh – Shadow Play
Genre: Black metal
Origin: Kharkiv, Ukraine
Label: Season Of Mist
Buy now on Bandcamp
While still blackened and epic, Shadow Play is in a very different world than Cradle of Filth. Lots of quick picking and beats. There’s an air of sadness throughout that adds some weight here.
Euphrosyne – Morus
Genre: Post-black metal/doom
Origin: Athens, Attica, Greece
Label: Black Lion Records
Buy now on Bandcamp
Let’s keep the grim-yet-different theme going with the debut from Euphrosyne. This young band mixes your more traditional black metal with stuff like Lacuna Coil. They’re doubling down on both darkness and emotion with that combo. A great record.
Imperial Triumphant – Goldstar
Genre: Avant-garde/black metal
Origin: New York City, New York
Label: Century Media
Buy now on Bandcamp
Metal Injection’s favorite trio of masked weirdos has made their (Imperial) Triumphant return with another wild collection of chaotic, dissonant black metal. This one fascinates, confuses, and compels. Speaking of trio, there’s also a trio of guests with Dave Lombardo (Fantômas), Tomas Haake (Meshuggah), and Yoshiko Ohara (Bloody Panda).
Pop Evil – What Remains
Genre: Hard rock/alternative metal
Origin: Muskegon, Michigan
Label: MNRK Heavy
Buy now on Bandcamp
Album number eight from these not quite djent, not quite metalcore mainstays is another soaring, catchy affair. It’s one that’ll get your head bobbing and/or stuck in your head whether you like it or not. This also is their first record with new drummer Blake Allison (Devour the Day).
Sometime In February – Where Mountains Hide
Genre: Progressive metal
Origin: Charlotte, North Carolina
Label: Inside Out / Century Media Records
Buy now on Bandcamp
Loyal readers will know that I love me some prog metal. Despite that, I don’t always love your wanky instrumental prog acts. Sometime In February are one that I do love though as they are able to collectively shine technically while showcasing excellent songwriting abilities. It’s one that will keep the listener guessing. If you’ve seen BtBaM in the last couple years and wondered where they got their live guitarist, this is the band.
SpiritWorld – Helldorado
Genre: Western metal
Origin: Las Vegas, Nevada
Label: Century Media
Buy now on Bandcamp
Concluding this week with a hearty and horrifying “yeehaw!” The third in what’s their calling their “death-western trifecta” has plenty of twang but is able to dip a toe in a lot of metal flavors still. If you’ve ever been curious about this band’s deal, this would be a great place to sample them and them travel backwards into a whole unique world.
