This week’s new heavy metal releases include the second full-record from an already massive band, blues metal for your uncle, and more! To the metals…
ALSO! Today, Bandcamp is doing one of their days of giving 100% of what you pay directly to the labels and artists. So if you can get stuff from Bandcamp, please do.
Amber Asylum – Ruby Red

Genre: Neoclassical/dark ambient
Origin: San Francisco, California
Label: Prophecy Productions
Buy now on Bandcamp
Kicking the week off with some not-so-heavy jams that are still sure to haunt. Kris Force, Jackie Perez Gratz (Grayceon/Giant Squid) and the rest are brooding and beautiful on this. This hits like sludge without the guitars.
Dawn Of Ouroboros – Bioluminescence
Genre: Progressive Post-Black/Death Metal
Origin: Oakland, California
Label: Prosthetic
Buy now on Bandcamp
Sticking to the Bay Area, up next is the third album from the melodic and dynamic metal outfit Dawn of Ouroboros. They’ve never been a stranger to traversing multiple genres and this album has them bringing blackened metal, mixed with some metalcore, as well has some almost lounge and pop moments. I highly recommend this to folks that like metal that keeps them guessing.
Edge Of Paradise – Prophecy
Genre: Symphonic/heavy metal
Origin: Los Angeles, California
Label: Napalm
Buy now on Bandcamp
Margarita Monet and the boys are back with album number six of hefty grooves and hooks for days. They’re open about this being their first record with eight-string git-fiddles, so that explains why this one feels heavier and djent-ier than before.
Frogg – Eclipse
Genre: Progressive death metal
Origin: New York, New York
Label: Self-released
Buy now on Bandcamp
After a few years of one-off singles and an EP this stellar prog project is finally gifting us with a full record. This includes some wild guitar work, breakneck shifts in tone, and is just a great time overall. This is recommended if you like BtBaM, Last Chance To Reason, etc.
Smith/Kotzen – Black Light/White Noise
Genre: Hard rock/heavy metal
Origin: Hackney, London, England/Reading, Pennsylvania
Label: BMG
Buy now from Smith/Kotzen
it’s been four years since Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) and Richie Kotzen (The Winery Dogs) scratched their blues rock itch. Lots of shredding here so it’s sort of in the Vai, Satriani realm, but then they ground it with some foot-stomping hard rock when needed.
Spiritbox – Tsunami Sea
Genre: Progressive/alternative metal
Origin: Victoria, British Columbia
Label: Pale Chord
Buy now from Spiritbox
Spiritbox are continuing their win-streak of pop-infused progressive metal that will get stuck in your head and get you nodding. I know that between singles, EPs, etc that this band has been at it for a while. However, this is their second album, and I don’t often see this sort of meteoric rise between albums doing this weekly thing. Totally deserved.
Whitechapel – Hymns In Dissonance
Genre: Deathcore/groove metal
Origin: Knoxville, Tennessee
Label: Metal Blade
Buy now on Bandcamp
Hymns In Dissonance finally arrives closing the band’s longest gaps between records yet, and it arrives like a hammer to the head. This is breakdowns, fury, and low vocal delivery paired with some rather epic atmosphere.
