Some bands are really loyal to their original intent keeping the flame of it for a very long time. I really praise bands that keep their faith no matter what. Trick or Treat are one of them. There is no way of denying the band has been keeping its original message of compelling fun songs infused with smart references to the horror, video game and comics culture. After reviewing their four albums I am obliged to respect their hard faith and loyalty not to mention “Ghosted” had a little help from their international friends Chris Bowes and Adrienne Cowan, guest vocalists on two songs.
Well, musicwise, “Ghosted” is no different from its predecessors we reviewed here. I really respect the passion the band has for its music. It is touching, if you allow me to say. The highlight for me would be “Dance with the Dancing Clown“ due to its theme and the dark reference to a character that at the same time makes people laugh and fear. Well, I guess nowadays it’s more fear than laugh. Maybe I have some kind of coulrophobia – fear of clowns. It is not fear, may I say, but some kind discomfort with their presence. I really do not think they are funny. Never did. But Trick or Treat‘s approach is pleasant with the cohesive team as usual. It’s also impossible to deny the musical talent of the musicians. They are very good at what they do. My impression is that little by little, album by album, they are getting better. Of course, there will not be a revolution here, but improvements are expected as in “Return to Monkey Island,” and its more groovy approach. The burning question is do we take Trick or Treat seriously as a serious band with serious themes or do we accept them just the way they are. I guess it’s better the latter. Some bands are just the way they are.
Albums as “Ghosted” belong the kind of secure albums. They are the ones the fan is sure of what he/she is going to find. There are no surprises at all. This may be good or not. It depends on what the fan is expecting. A groundbreaker album? No, it is not going to happen. A fun album? Yeah, for sure.
Trick or Treat “Ghosted” will be released on April 28th via Scarlet Records.
