It is no secret I love the genres that were the forefathers of Metal music as Psychedelic Rock, Acid Rock, Heavy Rock, Blues Rock, and, of course, the Blues. While the two latters are very scarce here, the other three are plenty. I have been receiving my share of Psychedelic Rock, Heavy Rock, and Acid Rock throughout the years. The reason I like them so much is because I was born during the time this kind of music was at its top, so I have an affective memory of it. There are songs I used to listen when I was a child through the TV or the radio therefore the affective memory. Some of them I happen to have known the name only few years ago. Others I kept listening.
To listen to Tumble “Lost in Light” is a trip to memory lane and I have no doubt or shame about that. “Lost in Light‘s” merit is to present Heavy Rock to the future generations and they do it with flying colors, however, their music is not from that golden era. It is brand new. I cannot even say it is a reinterpretation of the good old times because they mix musical features as, for instance, in album opener “Laid By Fear” the main guitar riffing is pure Metal from the 1980’s. Nobody in the 1960’s or 1970’s used to do that. The same happens with “Wings of Gold” whose initial intro is Metal inspired. That said we can go on.
As I said “Lost in Light” is a delicious trip to memory lane with a modern grip. The EP is capable of bringing back many musical memories. “Laid By Fear,” for instance, has a moment when I reminded of Focus “Hocus Pocus” – that one with the famous traditional Swiss chant. Giving the album a second thought, there is a lot of Focus in it. I have to say “Dead By Rumour‘s” heavy grip given by the thick guitar overtone is enough to make any metaller like the song. By the way, the overtones of the album are fantastic – Yes, I may like an album only for its instruments overtones. “Sullen Slaves” keep the mood with a frentic guitar phrase, as Led Zeppelin used to do, that keeps the fan by the gut. I just loved the guitar solos – Yes, I like albums for the guitar solos.
I have no problem with recriations as “Lost in Light” presents here. It is a way of honoring the past with a foot in the present. What really matters is the music, and the music here is fantastic. That’s it.
