Ya know, the Ramones are the kind of band that really do need to be celebrated outside of whatever Halloween cover band scenario might align at the end of the year, or even just a run of the mill celebration in general. It seems that we’ll be getting just that, by way of a few tribute records set to come out this summer on Magentic Eye Records.
The label has been putting in work, attempting to include a swath of artists to participate in all the fanfare. Two of the label’s installments will honor the Ramones name, with one of the efforts being a full over of their self-titled 1976 debut. The other will be a grab bag of greatest hits.
Both of the tributes have some professional backing. They were both curated by the Grammy award-winning producer Marc Urselli, by way of a Kickstarter that raised more than $6,000.
Urselli said:
“The Ramones weren’t just a band, they were a sonic revolution that challenged the established norms of popular music. Decades after their inception, the effect of their work echoes through the chords of new generations. Their music remains timeless, a testament to the enduring power of simplicity and authenticity. As the godfathers of punk, the Ramones not only shaped a genre but reshaped the essence of what rock and roll could be — a raw, unapologetic expression of rebellion and individuality.”
The tributes feature a variety of artists, from Napalm Death to GWAR to Voivod to Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and more. The official tracklist and release date haven’t been announced or confirmed, but everything is slated to fall in June. The list of confirmed contributors goes as follows:
