It took me a little while to realize Death Metal has its own dynamic. It takes time to understand the organic organization of the music Death Metal bands make because, to some extent, anything is possible to happen inside a Death Metal album. The only thing that remains the same are the vocals; instrumentals and influences vary a lot. It was hearing an institution as Wombbath I realized that. Well, not really while listening to “Beyond the Abyss,” but all the albums I have reviewed so far.
“Beyond the Abyss” is very different from its antecessor 2021’s “Agma,” because Wombbath decided to keep things straight here and perform an album near their roots. But that doesn’t mean “Beyond the Abyss” is a raw album, no, it’s the other way around, it has some pretty complex structures as the bold guitars of “Words Unspoken” where they might sound a llittle bit off tune. Wombbath kept their prone to write complex music without lacking any pound of heavyness. The combination of the bass and the drums of album tittle “Beyond the Abyss” sounds as a punch in the face of the fan. Or, better yet, I got the impression someone was hitting the walls with all the strength possible.
Here and there, “Beyond the Abyss” showcases some violins and some classical music structures as in “Intro” and the album tittle. However, in tracks as “Malevolent” Wombbath get very vicious with all the power there is in Death Metal. As I keep always saying, this power does not have anything to do with speed, because thinking it plain, “Beyond the Abyss” cannot be understood as a fast album, even though some parts in “Malevolent,” for instance, are pretty fast. In fact, this album may be understood as more cadenced than fast. That’s what can perceived by the cadence of “Faces of Tragedy” which bounces from the fast as hell to a slow cadenced tune.
“Beyond the Abyss” dives into a more classical Death Metal routine keeping Wombbath‘s tradition of more intricate music writing without leaving some more traditional features as the whah pedal in “Deep Hunger.” The album adds more moody and ethereal effects via classical music features. Paying close attention to “Deep Hunger” the fan might notice some out of the bo guitars with an usual like almost in the background. By the way, this is an album to pay lots of sttention to the background.
Wombbath “Beyond the Abyss” will be released on March 14th via Pulverised Records.
