This past Friday, a unique event took place at the BRIC in Brooklyn, New York that mixed timeless prose with one of the most influential metal albums of the early 2000s, as Mastodon participated in a discussion about Herman Melville’s influential 1851 novel Moby Dick. Specifically, the band was there to share how the book influenced both their vaunted 2004 album Leviathan and the Met premiere of composer Jake Heggie’s operatic interpretation of the classic novel.
Aside from guitarist Brent Hinds, everyone in Mastodon was on hand alongside Heggie and composers Tamar-kali and David T. Little. And now, that discussion is available to watch online. It’s a deep conversation about the overarching story of Moby Dick and how it inspired the two very different pieces of music. Whether you’re a Mastodon fan, you’re a fan of literature, or you just need something thought-provoking to have on in the background, this should definitely scratch that itch.
However, if you’re looking for something a little more high octane, you can always catch Mastodon live this spring when they hit the road with both Coheed and Cambria and Periphery. The full list of dates for that tour is available below.
